Meditation has been used successfully in the treatment and prevention of high blood pressure, heart disease, migraine headaches and auto immune diseases such as diabetes and arthritis.  It has proved helpful in curtailing obsessive thinking, anxiety, depression and hostility.

You can learn to meditate within a few minutes.  Immediately your body will use less oxygen (sign of deep relaxation) while you are meditating.  However, as with most things, the benefits of meditation increase with practice.  Levels of relaxation deepen.  Attention becomes steadier.  You become more adept at living in the present moment.  Therefore, it is important to meditate regularly.

Learning to meditate is like learning to do anything.

Firstly, you need to be motivated as without motivation there is no energy to make the effort.

Secondly, you need to practice in order to learn.  All the reading in the world isn’t worth a week’s practice.

Thirdly you need to be determined.  People usually stop doing something when they decide that they’ll never be any good at it.  Meditation is no exception.  You may notice your mind going all over the place at first, but that’s okay.

Meditation is nothing more that anchoring your attention in the present.  Breathing is an anchor common to many traditional forms of meditation.  To anchor the mind even more firmly, a word or phrase is often added, repeated silently in time to the breathing.

Some of the benefits of meditation:

  • Improves your ability to relax, both physically and mentally
